Breaking Bad and Heisenberg’s Pork Pie Hat

Ever just get an urge to take on a new identity for awhile?  That notion is certainly taken to the extreme by Walter White in the popular, critically-acclaimed television show “Breaking Bad”.  The AMC drama is considered by many to be one of the best shows on television, known for well-crafted writing, intense acting, and astounding cinematography.  One of the many gems that the show has to offer is the incredible acting talents of Bryan Cranston, in the role of Walter White.

For those who haven’t seen the show, Walter is a suburbanite, high school chemistry teacher who is stricken with cancer in the first season.  He also has the responsibility of taking care of a wife, a newborn child, and a teenage son with cerebral palsy.  Through a series of events involving his brother-in-law in the DEA, Walter is introduced to the New Mexico crystal meth scene.  He decides to use his chemistry skills to cook some high-quality meth to help pay his family’s bills and build up a financial nest-egg for his family in case he passes away from cancer.

The show follows his increased involvement in major meth-amphetamine distribution, to the point that he actually becomes a major player in his region.  Along with that, he undergoes a major personality and lifestyle transformation.  His evolution, starting mildly with the decision to shave his head before cancer makes the decision for him, involves him forming an alter-ego under the alias “Heisenberg”.  White, or Heisenberg depending on how you know him, also wears a black windbreaker, dark sunglasses, and a thick goatee.  But the coolest part of his visual alteration has to be the striking pork pie hat that can often be seen resting on his bald head.

The black pork pie has become a signature part of the show, and a much easier way for fans to emulate Heisenberg than starting a major crystal meth operation.  We have noticed an increase in sales on hats.com for the Bollman Collection 1940’s Pork Pie Hat and attribute some of that to the popularity of the show.  Pick up a pork pie or top off your own alter-ego’s look with one of our many unique hats.

Keep Calm and Leave Your Hat On

By now, most people have heard about Prince Harry’s recent carousing in Las Vegas.  Many have given him flack for his behavior, but style-wise he’s got the right idea.  Even though he’s lacking garments in most of the pictures from his visit, he did make one good choice (which is still one more than most people make while they’re in Las Vegas).  Harry was photographed in a trendy but understated white fedora decorated with a solid black hatband.  For our purposes, we’ll just keep the pictures from the neck up.

Unlike Harry’s bum, hats.com has you covered with the look-alike fedoras below.  Pick one up or get a couple different styles for the end of summer.  Heck, even take one along on your own Vegas experience… just watch out for “friends with sneaky camera phones.  Also, if you’re worried about that silly “don’t wear white after labor day” thing, we have many different colors and styles in our selection of fedoras.

Barbarians on the Field, Gentlemen at the Press Conference: NFL Hat Fashion

The hat-wearing tradition is still alive and well with current players.  The rise of salaries and the player’s elevation to celebrity status has many players concerned with looking good when in the spotlight:

Arian Foster of the Houston Texans is one of the most fashionable guys in the league.  He’s been known to sport some nice fedoras like this snap-brim hat below:

As usual, Bailey of Hollywood is on top of combining old school, timeless designs with current flavor.  The Bailey of Hollywood Fall and Winter 2012 line has this if you’re looking for a similar look:

Or you can mix it up by choosing from several different colors and designs in new Bailey fedoras from this season.

You really can’t talk fashion in the NFL without mentioning the prettiest of prettyboys, Tom Brady.  This season’s line also has some simple but refined options like the one you see to the right on the New England Patriots quarterback.  Of course, Brady keeps it cool and warm in the frigid New England weather by frequently wearing knit pull-ons and beanies.  No promises on looking exactly like Tom Brady, as we don’t currently have his genetics in stock, but Bailey hats will give you a step in the right direction.  We have tons of options for you to create your own look, and the current offerings from Bailey of Hollywood are top-notch.  Make sure to peruse Hats.com to get everything you need for the upcoming fall and winter.   We also have baseball style caps with all of your favorite teams!  Have an enjoyable football season!

NFL Coach Hats of Yesteryear

It’s almost that time of year that a lot of people look forward to.  Housewives become fantasy wide receiver stat junkies, jersey sales creep upward, and the dog days start turning into the occasional chilly night, teasing you into thinking fall has arrived.  And even though preseason is really just time to experiment, we warm up our arguing muscles with discussions about whether it matters if your starting quarterback beat up on my third string.  Clear your Sunday schedules football fans, it’s almost time for the 2012 NFL season.

Part of what makes professional athletes, especially NFL players, so interesting to us is their larger-than-life personalities.  Players are not judged by their on-field behavior alone; they are now constantly scrutinized in their everyday life.  And that includes their fashion choices.  What they wear becomes a source of criticism, praise, debate, and means to imitate.

Interestingly, hats have always played a part in the wardrobes of NFL players and coaches.  The popular sports blog Bleacherreport.com compiled a list of the Fifteen Best Dressed Head Coaches in NFL History.  It’s no surprise that several of these striking figures were known for the hats that adorned their X and O filled heads.  Check out some of these great hat-wearing coaches that made the best-dressed list.

Former Packers coach Vince Lombardi, known for his grit and determination to succeed, is almost as well known for his ever-present dark fedora.

Tom  Landry had a similar reputation in the league.  Well respected for his coaching talent, he also carried himself like a gentleman at all times.  Part of the way he built that persona was by always dressing in sharp clothes and donning a fedora.

So you want some hats like these great coaches but they just don’t make ‘em like that anymore, right?  Wrong. Baileys of Hollywood has a long history of setting standards in the fashion and hat industry.  Their new fall and winter collection has several quality fedoras that sustain the legacy of these coaches.  And they can be found at hats.com.  See below for some fedoras that look like they came right out of Lombardi and Landry’s collection:

Or some that marry traditional styling with some current-day flavor:

Maybe former coach and commentator Bum Phillips is more your style.  If you don’t know Bum Phillps or need a refresher on this always-entertaining fellow, he is absolutely worthy of a Google search.  These hilarious quotes and this short video are a good place to start.  His signature cowboy hats were an excellent symbol of his spirit, especially when he wore them during games.

Bailey doesn’t just make fedoras, they also have Bailey Western hats.  Browse through these western hats  featured on hats.com to replicate Bum’s style.  For once, if someone says you look like a bum you can take it as a compliment!

The influence of these coaches can still be seen around the league today.  Keep an eye out for a future blog post showcasing what hats players like to wear when they’re off the gridiron.  In the meantime, start picking out your own favorites from Bailey of Hollywood’s fall and winter 2012 lines on hats.com!

A Birthday Tea Party with hats.com!

Yesterday, our lovely photo assistant Kelsey celebrated her birthday in style at hats.com! She requested a tea party/picnic and we delivered! From a scenic location at the nearby creek, we enjoyed scones with clotted cream, mini sandwiches and – of course – tea! Decked out in our teatime finery (with the obvious topping of some great hats), we enjoyed our lunch breaks together in absolutely fabulousness! It was also a great bonding experience with our new Director Chris and new merchandiser Job!

Our birthday girl made a splash in the Renegade by Bailey Vivienne Top Hat (with an added bow and pearls); Jesi wore the Plaza Suite Christelle Fascinator; Mel enjoyed Plaza Suite’s Cambridge Fascinator; Ben wore the Bailey of Hollywood Suntino; Job wore Kangol’s Heathered Tau Cap; and Chris wore the Kangol Adjustable Baseball Cap!
