A Birthday Tea Party with hats.com!

Yesterday, our lovely photo assistant Kelsey celebrated her birthday in style at hats.com! She requested a tea party/picnic and we delivered! From a scenic location at the nearby creek, we enjoyed scones with clotted cream, mini sandwiches and – of course – tea! Decked out in our teatime finery (with the obvious topping of some great hats), we enjoyed our lunch breaks together in absolutely fabulousness! It was also a great bonding experience with our new Director Chris and new merchandiser Job!

Our birthday girl made a splash in the Renegade by Bailey Vivienne Top Hat (with an added bow and pearls); Jesi wore the Plaza Suite Christelle Fascinator; Mel enjoyed Plaza Suite’s Cambridge Fascinator; Ben wore the Bailey of Hollywood Suntino; Job wore Kangol’s Heathered Tau Cap; and Chris wore the Kangol Adjustable Baseball Cap!

Behind the Scenes: hats.com Photoshoots

You see tons of lovely images on hats.com – some from the respective brand’s lookbooks, but most taken by the hats.com photographer, Jesi! But are these just pictures of random people we know that were snapped in someone’s backyard? Nope!

Our photoshoots are a process involving multiple members of the hats.com team! The first step in development is a model search in the local area. We compile a bunch of applications and start the approval process. Once we have a model chosen and contacted, the fun begins! We reserve a location and start planning.

Our marketing associate (and photoshoot stylist/assistant), Mel, goes onto hats.com into the applicable men’s, women’s or children’s category. Hats are selected on one or more of the following criteria: brand new styles from our brands, top sellers, and fashion trends from the runways and magazines. Colors are selected to correspond with the model’s hair, skin and eye color; and shapes are chosen based on the model’s face shape. An average shoot has about 30 – 50 hats chosen, with some shoots having upwards of 75 styles planned!  The list of desired styles are passed onto the Merchandiser, Cynthia, who places a photo sample order. Once the hats arrive, each product must be unpacked, have tags and stuffing removed, and then organized by brand and shape on the photoshoot cart. The prep work for a photoshoot combines to hours of work for one afternoon of photography, but the organization and prep not only makes things easier: we couldn’t do the shoot without it!

On the day of photography, the model arrives and we head to the location. Shooting begins almost immediately from arrival – lasting 1 1/2 – 3 hours. The whirlwind of activity requires two staff members: the photographer and an assistant – both armed with cameras. Each hat gets 5 – 20 photos before switching to the next style. The shoot is organic, moving from one spot to another, adjusting for light, backgrounds and variety. As Jesi snaps image after image – directing the model and adjusting for the elements – her assistant is choosing the next hat, carrying a stack of pending styles, snapping behind the scenes images and helping with anything she needs. The fast-paced afternoon is exhausting for staff and models alike, but the mood is always light and fun… and filled with smiles and laughter.

Once the shoot is finished, goodbyes are said and the staff returns to the office, Jesi downloads all of the photos from the camera and clean up begins. Carts of discarded hats are cleaned up and put away, boxes are sent for recycling or reused, model information and paperwork is filed. Discs are burnt and images are gone through, a handful of the final images are posted to Facebook, Twitter, tumblr and flickr. Graphics are begun and work returns to normal. But for a few days, the whirlwind of activity overtakes the office and excitement brews. And the final result?

Behind the Scenes: New Team Members

In the recent months, hats.com went through a bunch of changes. You’ve met Mel, Jesi and Kevin. Cynthia has even made a few appearances around here. Now, meet the newest team members!

Ben

Our new programmer/computer wiz is a robot loving code fiend. He writes scripts, maintains sites and does all sorts of crazy computer things that boggle my mind. He’s super awesome at what he does, and fun to have in the office! Who else would impersonate a gummy bear or take the abuse of working with a bunch of girls?

Kelsey

Fresh out of school, our new photo clipper Kelsey is a big ball of fun and intrigue! You can’t go wrong with a desk full of robots, ponies, dressed up bunnies and pop culture paraphenalia. An avid chef and baker, this well-dressed and fun Photoshop master is a welcome addition to the team.

Off the Hat Tree: Meet Some Awesome Styles

We love hats. I think that may be an obvious statement, but it should be mentioned every now and again. It’s probably evident if you follow us on facebook, and I’m sure it comes through on this blog. While it’s technically “work” while we’re here Monday through Friday, we all love it. We love hats.

It’s even evident when you walk in the office. Sure, we have hats on our desks that we’re working with . . . and some that are ours in case we forgot/need/switch a style. But we have hat trees, shelves, and racks full of hats. It’s not rare that someone just stands up and grabs a hat because it’s cool, fun or silly. It’s not even odd to walk in and find someone in a top hat!

Today, I want to introduce our hat trees. These two racks of specially bent metal with padded displays are piled with hats. Here are some of our favorites in the office right now:

1. hats.com’s Layla Sun Hat

2. Kangol’s Aerial7 Earlap Army Cap

3. Aegean’s Wool Green Fisherman Cap

4. Ignite’s New Isle Peru Trapper

5. Kangol’s Camo Havelock

6. Bailey of Hollywood’s Tino Fedora

7. Ignite’s Fur Trapper

8. Kangol’s Italian Tweed Bugatti

9. Bailey of Hollywood Harker Derby

10. hat.com’s Boris Flex Bamboo Cap

Field Trip: NYC

Yesterday, Mel and Jesi got to go to NYC for a conference. So, bright and early (or rather, dark and early since the sun had yet to rise), the two boarded a bus to the Big Apple. It was a fun day filled with many hats, tasty treats and even and afternoon tea. Some tidbits from the day:

- The Kangol Mowbray style got its name from an entree! In northern England, pork pie is a delicacy – the best being the Melted Mowbray – so the name was shortened to “mowbray” for this stylish pork pie hat.

- When leaving the Port Authority building on the 8th Avenue side. If you are facing the street, lower number blocks are forward and to the right. (Translate: we walked up 40th, cut through Bryant Park to  find 42nd, then up to 5th Ave only to find we needed to be at 38th…maybe we just have a bad sense of direction)

- Hat show rooms are immaculate. And beautiful. And if you add bunny rabbits, rainbows and glitter, they just might be what dreams are made of. Perfectly positioned hangers form grids of balanced hats. Arranged by season, collection, style . . . it’s a little overwhelming if you let yourself get too immersed. The hats are displayed perfectly but accessibly, allowing viewers to touch, hold . . . even try on.

- When it comes to flat caps (like the Kangol 504, etc), flat brims are okay for guys, but for women, make sure you curl the brim! It’s much more flattering to the female face and completely changes the appearance of the hat.

Around the Office: The Ebbs and Flow of Transition

The past month or so has been eventful at hats.com to say the least. We lost our photo clipper and merchandiser to bigger and better things. The office went through construction (it’s almost done, but we’ll pretend it’s finished just for the sake of my sanity). New office furniture meant moving computers and personal effects before we could build our fancy new Ikea desks and put them in place. Then move everything back. We have two new employees (Gillian and Jordan) to fill empty desks. Hopefully things will settle down now. We welcome new faces and push forward with the same determination as usual. Hats off to all of you for not noticing if I happened to miss the usual “Get the Look” blog post yesterday or that Facebook doesn’t get as much lovin’ sometimes. You’re the reason we’re here, providing great products and service to the hat lovers of the world. I feel we all need to stand in a circle with hands in the center, magic rings glowing as we yell “Hat lovers unite!” before fighting that super evil giant robot that’s invading.

Here you can see the spiffy new desks and the backs of Jordan & Gillian's heads.

Around the Office: Construction

See that highlight area? There used to be a wall there. Now, instead of a crazy polygon of an office, we have a rectangle! Knocking the wall out is going to allow two columns of desks so we aren’t all quite so mashed together and/or sharing desks (Kevin’s great, but my own desk? Hallelujah!)

The maintenance crew is doing a great job! The project isn’t done yet, but it will be awesome when completed! hats.com is already an awesome place to work, but in a week or two, it will be even awesomer (hm, is that a word?).

Around the Office: The Random Ficus

The hats.com office is our second home. We all spend at least 40 hours a week here, so it needs personality and fun to keep us from stabbing our eyes out after looking at a computer screen for 4 straight hours. There are little things around the office – from art to a large quantity of hats – that make the day interesting.

One decoration in the office is what Jesi calls “The Horrible Fake Ficus”. Yes, it’s fake, dusty and sort of falling apart… but add some fun little decorations and it’s a point of interest! Donning a moustache where a Christmas Tree wears its star, cartoons, dolls and origami, the ficus adds a bit of green to the very white walls.
